The boys varsity tennis team, led by seniors Stuart Gordon, Finn Gosch, and Myles Ramos, finished the season with a record of 16-7.
During the season, the team traveled to Jekyll Island, Georgia, to participate in the Jekyll Jam Tennis Tournament. The team defeated a strong AAAAAA Glynn Academy team to win the Jekyll Jam Championship. In region, the team did not lose a set during regular season play and tournament play, going undefeated to win the Region 4 championship for the second consecutive year. The boys were strong contenders for a state title, easily advancing to the state quarterfinals, where the team lost to the eventual state champions. Five members of the team were selected to the All-Region team: Sanil Sawja, Stuart Gordon, Finn Gosch, Derek Zhou, and Myles Ramos. The team is already preparing for next year as they seek to win a third region title and the state title!
2017-18 WA Varsity Boys Tennis Team
George Westlund, Head Coach
Coach Westlund has been coaching at Woodward for over a decade, and has been the varsity head coach since 2013. During his first year, the team won the Region Championship and were state runners-up. Since then, Westlund has led the team to the region finals and the state quarterfinals. He began with the tennis program as the JV girls coach before moving to coach the Middle School boys team for the next five years. During those years, the boys team had a record of 24 wins and only 8 losses. Westlund is focused on creating and maintaining a tennis program that is dedicated to producing competitive teams while helping students develop character and commitment to Woodward.
