Riflery Watch

2017-2018 was a terrific season for the 3-position air rifle team. Led by seniors Crystal Chen and Annalyn Smith, the team of five, including juniors Sydney Hallas, Manaphy Wang, and Jacob Workman, finished 2nd in Area 5, with a season record of 8-1 and a team average of 1143 out of 1200.

In competition at the Area 5 Championships, they fired their highest score of the season, an 1156 out of 1200, finishing 2nd out of 17 teams. Competing at the State Championships in April at Fort Benning, Georgia, they fired a combined 1142-59, finishing 6th out of 121 teams that began the season in early November.

Annalyn Smith (2017-2018 War Eagle Award Recipient) was named 4th to the All-Area 5 Team with a season high average of 291.33. She fired a best match score of 296 out of 300, which qualified her for the State Championships as an individual. With a 98.10 aggregate, she placed 2nd in Area 5 for kneeling position high average.

Sydney Hallas was named 10th to the All-Area 5 Team with a season high average of 287.25.  She fired a best match score of 293 out of 300, which also qualified her for the State Championships as an individual.  She also posted a season personal best of 99 out of 100 in the kneeling position.

Jacob Workman fired a perfect 100 in prone position three times over the course of the competition season.  Crystal Chen fired 98 out of 100 in the standing position in addition to a 100 in the prone position. Manaphy Wang, a first year international athlete who learned to shoot air rifle at Woodward beginning in August, fired a perfect 100 in the prone position in March and earned her varsity letter.

Sid Oliver, Head Coach (13 years)  

Coach Oliver retired from the U.S. military. During his service, he went undefeated as a light middle weight boxer. Since 1999, Woodward has participated in nine state championship matches in riflery, winning three state championships, coming in at 2nd place on one occasion, and 3rd place on another. Alumni of the program have gone on to compete on riflery teams for the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, and the University of Memphis.
