The girls tennis team had another exciting and successful season this year. The 2019 team finished with an overall record of 16-5.
Regular season highlights included beating rivals Westminster, Marist, Starr’s Mill, and Carrollton (Senior Night). Additionally, the War Eagles competed for the first time in the Granger Invitational in LaGrange, defeating Buford and N. Gwinnett 3-2 in match play. They also, once again, went undefeated in region play.
Led by captains Sydney Taylor (4-yr letter winner and 2-yr. captain) and Sarah Lewis (4-yr letter winner), the team swept Eastside 3-0 to be crowned Region 4-AAAA Champions! In the state playoffs, the girls remained unbeaten through the first two rounds, defeating Americus-Sumter 4-0 and then Burke County 4-0. In the quarterfinal round (Elite Eight), they battled tough but lost 0-3 to Marist, who went on to win the AAAA State title. Sarah Lewis (Sr.), Sydney Lopez (Sr.), Sydney Taylor (Sr.), and Ansley Carpenter (So.) were named unanimously to the 2019 All-Region Team. #1 singles player, Ansley Carpenter (14-6) and #2 singles player, Sydney Lopez (16-2), were voted co-MVPs for this season. The coveted War Eagle Award was presented to Sarah Lewis (15W-3L) for her leadership, sportsmanship, and dedication to Woodward tennis.
Congratulations to all ten team members on an outstanding season, and best of luck to our six veteran seniors: Mia Chan, Bethany Getachew, Sarah Lewis, Sydney Lopez, Roshni Shah, and Sydney Taylor!
