From the Athletic Director: Spring 2019
Dear War Eagle Fans,
We were so pleased with the way our student-athletes competed during the spring 2019 athletic season! Our baseball, golf, lacrosse, riflery, soccer, tennis, track & field, and ultimate teams played with passion and sportsmanship, displaying both the excellence and character we would expect from our War Eagles. This year, we added three eSports teams which competed at the highest level, with one of our teams finishing third in the state playoffs.
This spring, our girls golf team won its second straight state title, and seventh state title overall. Our boys tennis team advanced deep in the state playoffs and finished as runner-up. Each of our other teams competed hard, with nine region or area titles between them, including many deep runs into the state playoffs.
I’m excited for you to read about our teams and these incredible student-athletes and coaches in this edition of War Eagle Watch. In addition to the team recaps, enjoy interviews with track athlete AnaSimone Guillaume and girls golf coach Pete Fritts, who has enjoyed a storied career at Woodward coaching several sports at the highest level.
Now that the 2018-2019 school year is over, I wanted to thank each of you for trusting us to coach and educate your wonderful student-athletes. Athletics offer a unique opportunity for us to teach young people how to develop as competitors, learners, and committed members of a community. We are so proud of the way our student-athletes have conducted themselves this spring, and the way they performed in competition is a direct result of the hard work and dedication they’ve shown throughout the year.
Go War Eagles!
Jose Fernandez, Ed.D., Athletic Director
