After graduating 10 of the top 12 players from the 2018 team, this season looked to be a rebuilding year for the boys ultimate team.
After some ups and downs early in the season, the team hit its stride in the middle of the season. At Terminus — Atlanta’s biggest high school ultimate tournament — the team went 3-0 on the first day to win its pool and advance to the quarterfinals. Unfortunately, they lost the quarterfinal match to Druid Hills. The team continued to build through the rest of the regular season and went into the state tournament as the No. 4 team in the state. After an easy win over Mountain View in the quarterfinals, the boys had to face the defending national champions — Grady High School. The game was back and forth with neither team ever leading by more than 2. In the end, Grady won 9-8 to end Woodward’s season. The team graduates just four seniors in 2019, so the 2020 season and beyond look very promising.
