The 2019-2020 Woodward Academy boys basketball season was one for the history books. The War Eagles defeated Cross Creek HS 75-56 to win the Georgia High School Association Class 4A State Championship–the first boys title in school history!
The War Eagles finished the season with an overall record of 30-2, garnering the single most wins by a boys basketball team in school history. In addition to their state championship, the War Eagles captured the Kevin Brown National Memorial Tournament championship in Peoria, Illinois, and won their third consecutive Region 4-AAAA championship. The team completed their season ranked in the top 75 nationally in all classifications and top three in the state of Georgia. Leading the charge for the War Eagles was 7-foot star Walker Kessler. A UNC commit, Walker earned recognition and several prestigious awards, including MVP of the Kevin Brown Memorial Tournament, Region 4-AAAA Player of the Year, AJC All Class Player of the Year, Georgia Gatorade Player of the Year, and “Mr. Georgia” Basketball. Walker was also selected as a McDonald’s All-American and member of the Nike Hoops Summit. In addition to Kessler, Emory Lanier (Davidson commit) and Michael Whitmore received all-region and all-state recognition during the 2019-2020 season, while two-sport star Jacorrei Turner provided leadership before heading to the University of Arkansas to play football. Next season, all-state guard Will Richard and a host of talented War Eagles look to compete in a new classification with the goal of building on this historical season.
