From the Athletic Director: Spring 2018
Dear War Eagle Fans,
As I reflect on the 2017-2018 school year, I couldn’t be more proud of the student-athletes and coaches who pour their hearts and souls into Woodward athletics day after day.
This year brought 12 area/region athletic championships with 25 teams qualifying for state playoffs and one state championship girls golf team. And, with 17 graduates from the Class of 2018 continuing on to play at the collegiate level, I am confident that, because of Woodward, they have the skills they need to continue their athletic achievements at the next level.
During the spring season our baseball, golf, lacrosse, riflery, soccer, tennis, track and field, and Ultimate teams demonstrated true War Eagle spirit by competing with honor. I invite you to read about the season and some of our truly talented student-athletes and coaches throughout our War Eagle Watch website. In addition to recaps of every one of our varsity spring sports, our wrap-up highlights student-athlete Eric Malever who has achieved great success on our boys lacrosse team and has already committed to the University of Maryland, and beloved girls tennis coach Eileen McWhorter who, for more than 30 years, has coached a number of sports at Woodward and has earned six state championship rings during that time.
I hope you enjoy reading about our spring sports. And while titles and championships are important, what we do here at Woodward extends beyond just our athletic records—it’s about developing well-rounded student-athletes who embody our motto of excellence, character, and opportunity. Have a wonderful summer break and, when we return to school in August, I invite you to join us as we cheer our fall teams on to victory!
Go War Eagles!
Jose Fernandez, Ed.D., Athletic Director
