From the Athletic Director: Winter 2019
Dear War Eagle Fans,
It was a tremendous winter 2018-2019 athletic season for Woodward Academy! Throughout this season, our student-athletes and coaches for the basketball, wrestling, swimming and diving, and clay target teams displayed tremendous heart and athletic excellence in their respective sports.
This winter, our wrestling team added to the Woodward trophy case, capturing both the state duals title and the traditional state championship. Our boys swimming and diving team was the state runner up in their classification and our boys basketball team advanced to the Final Four for the first time since 1997. Each of our other winter teams advanced to the state championships as well.
I invite you to explore this edition of War Eagle Watch, where we’ve shared team recaps for each of our winter varsity sports. We’ve also featured a Q&A with junior basketball player Walker Kessler, who helped lead the boys basketball team deep in the playoffs and who also is considered one of the top high school basketball prospects in the country.
As we finish the 2018-2019 school year, I wanted to convey again how grateful I am to all of you for allowing us to coach and teach your talented student-athletes here at the Academy. Athletics is an opportunity to not only grow in terms of skill level in a particular sport, but to grow as a teammate, leader, and, truly, a student. Our student-athletes this winter, and in all seasons, have demonstrated that growth time and time again, and I couldn’t be prouder of their accomplishments.
Go War Eagles!
Jose Fernandez, Ed.D., Athletic Director
